21 Ways To Write a Blog Post With Chat GPT (Step-by-Step)
Ever since it was released, I’ve been experimenting with writing content with ChatGPT.
Using my prior knowledge and experience ranking articles written with the help of other premium AI tools (such as Jasper AI), I was able to develop a 21-step workflow.
Before you get started, make sure that you create a free or paid account on the OpenAI website.
Here is how to write a blog post with Chat GPT – that gets ranked and read.
1) Ask ChatGPT To Find a Good Keyword
The first step is to find a keyword or topic for your blog post.
By entering your topic into the software, ChatGPT will generate a list of related keywords that you can use to focus your blog post.
You can even prompt ChatGPT to find your topical keywords based on popular Google searches.
ChatGPT Prompt for Keywords: You are an SEO Keyword expert. Please give me a list of 10 low-competition keywords related to [TOPIC]. Present the data in a table with the keywords ranked by popularity.
Of course, you would insert your topic in the brackets.
Once you get your list of keywords, run them through a keyword tool.
I like to use Ahrefs or RankIQ but you can use whatever one you prefer. You can also manually check the Google search results page to ensure that the keyword is low-competition and that you clearly understand the search intent.
For this guide, I came up with the keyword, “What Do You Call a Deer With No Eyes? (Joke Explained).”
2) Ask ChatGPT To Create A Good Title
Once you have a keyword or phrase, it’s time to create a title for your post.
You can either use the exact keyword or a variation of it.
The key here is to create a title that is both eye-catching and descriptive. ChatGPT can help you with this task by providing title suggestions that are tailored to your topic.
ChatGPT Prompt for Blog Post Titles: You are a professional blogger. Please provide me with 10 catchy and SEO-optimized titles for my blog post about [Keyword] for [Target Audience].
Again, fill in your information in the brackets.
Once you have your list of titles, select the one that:
- Resonates best with you
- Matches the search intent (informational, review, etc)
- Sounds catchy
- Is < than 60 characters (for SEO and ranking)
Here is a screenshot of what ChatGPT produced for me:
3) Ask ChatGPT To Create A Good Outline
Now that you have a headline, it’s time to create an outline for your post.
Creating an outline is the foundation for organizing your thoughts and ideas.
It helps to ensure that you don’t miss any important points or facts.
ChatGPT can help you with this task by suggesting relevant subtopics, questions, and other content ideas that are related to your topic.
ChatGPT Prompt for a Blog Post Outline: Please provide me with 10 suggested subtopics related to my blog post about [TITLE] with the main keyword [KEYWORD].
If you know some of the topics you want to be covered, include them in the instructions.
Simply say, “Include these topics in the outline: [TOPIC 1], [TOPIC 2], [TOPIC 3],” etc.
Once ChatGPT provides you with a list of suggestions, use them as a starting point.
Feel free to customize it or add more topics if needed.
Staying with our working example, here is a screenshot of my ChatGPT outline:
4) Ask ChatGPT To Write a Good Introduction
ChatGPT will remember the outline it just created for you.
So, ask it to write a good introduction based on the topic, keyword, and outline.
ChatGPT Prompt for a Blog Post Introduction: Please provide me with a catchy introduction to my blog post about “[TITLE].” Make sure to include all the topics covered in the outline.
Odds are that the introduction will be good but not perfect.
If you are completely unhappy with it, just ask ChatGPT to create a new introduction.
However, if the introduction is good enough, you can edit it later. That’s my go-to strategy. I think it’s a smart idea to always customize your intro so that your personality (and humanness) shines through the content.
Sometimes, though, ChatGPT really knocks it out of the park.
5) Ask ChatGPT To Write a Paragraph for Each Section of the Outline
Now that you have a catchy introduction, it’s time to ask ChatGPT to write one paragraph for each section of the outline.
ChatGPT Prompt For Expanding the Outline: Please provide a long explanation for each item in the outline for my blog post about “[TITLE].”
If you need additional paragraphs or sections, just ask ChatGPT to add them.
Remember, if you are not happy with what it produces, don’t be afraid to delete it or start over. That’s why we love using AI-powered writers (like ChatGPT) because they can quickly spin out content so that we can make quick edits as needed.
Here is a screenshot of how ChatGPT fleshed out my blog post outline:
As you can see, ChatGPT is really good at expanding your outline into a more robust brief.
For our example, my word count was already at around 275 words just with this one-click outline prompt. Pretty amazing!
6) Ask ChatGPT to Expand Sections
This step is optional but I find it is almost always necessary.
Some of the outline sections will need more content than others. If ChatGPT didn’t write much for a particular section, I’ll paste what it did write into the chat, along with a prompt to expand it.
ChatGPT Prompt for Expanding Sections: [PASTE CONTENT INTO CHAT PROMPT] Please expand this information into several paragraphs.
When I used this prompt for our example, ChatGPT almost always triples the word count.
And without needless fluff.
Not that 100% of the content is usable (by my tastes) but most of it is really good.
This is an example:
7) Ask ChatGPT to Give You Good Examples
You can also ask ChatGPT to come up with examples to use in your blog post.
For instance, if you are writing about the benefits of running, ask ChatGPT to provide real-world examples that demonstrate those benefits.
ChatGPT Prompt for Examples: Please provide me with 3 good examples that prove the benefits of running.
Sometimes it’s best not to give it too much direction beyond that.
It’ll come up with examples on its own and present them as a list.
You can pick which ones work best for your post, or even combine elements from multiple examples into one example that fits better in your post.
8) Ask ChatGPT to Make Tables of Data
I’ve already alluded to this earlier in this guide.
Another cool feature of ChatGPT is the ability for it to present information to you in tables.
Yes, you can ask ChatGPT to create a table of data with the information it gives you. While I haven’t figured out a way to copy and paste the table into a blog post, it’s still amazing.
If you wanted to, you could screenshot the table, crop it to size, and embed it in your article.
ChatGPT Prompt for Tables: Please provide me with a table of data that contains information about [THE DATA YOU NEED].
The results are usually accurate and easy to follow.
It’s great for presenting lots of information in an organized way. Always fact-check the content before you publish.
9) Ask ChatGPT To Give You Good Subheadings
Subheadings are a great way to divide up your blog post into clear and concise parts.
ChatGPT, as you may guess, can easily provide you with good subheadings that flow nicely with the content it generates.
The AI tool can also rewrite or upgrade existing subheadings.
Just ask ChatGPT to give you some compelling and click-worthy subheadings for each section of your blog post.
ChatGPT Prompt For Enhancing Subheadings: Give me a list of 10 compelling and click-worthy subheadings for a blog section about [EXISTING SUBHEADING].
Rinse and repeat with all of your subheadings.
You can even paste all of your existing sub-par subheadings into one prompt and ask ChatGPT to improve all of them at the same time.
10) Ask ChatGPT To Create a FAQ Section
If you want to make sure all of your readers’ questions are answered, you can always ask ChatGPT to create a FAQ section for you.
I create a FAQ section if there are questions that don’t fit into any of the other parts of the outline.
ChatGPT Prompt For FAQs: Please provide me with a list of the most common questions and answers related to my topic.
Sometimes, you find a list of questions during your keyword/topic research.
In that case, you can also list the questions and ask ChatGPT to answer all of them with a paragraph or two.
This is great for posts about complex topics or controversial issues that will likely have lots of comments in need of addressing.
Plus, it’s better for SEO since people often use related keywords when searching online.
11) Ask ChatGPT To Make a Bulleted List
Sometimes, you need to provide a bulleted list of tips for readers.
ChatGPT can help you do that, too.
Just ask it to come up with a list of tips related to your topic and it will. It’s actually pretty amazing how accurate the results are.
ChatGPT Prompt For Bulleted Lists: Please provide me with a bulleted list of 10 tips related to [TOPIC].
This is great for listicle posts like “Top 5 Ways To Lose Weight” or “10 Easy Steps To Make Money Online”.
Not only does ChatGPT make these lists quickly, but it also provides great information as well.
You can also get ChatGPT to turn any paragraph of text into a bulleted list.
12) Ask ChatGPT To Describe a Product
ChatGPT can write about almost any type of product – even specific brands.
Bloggers who write review-type content might find this invaluable.
For general product categories, simply prompt ChatGPT to describe and explain the product or service.
If you want ChatGPT to write about a specific product or brand, feed the AI as much information as you can so that you guide it toward accuracy.
ChatGPT Prompt for Product Descriptions: Please provide me with a detailed description of [PRODUCT/SERVICE]. Include these details: [Details].
The result will be an impressive, detailed overview that can give your readers the exact information they need.
You could also include an example of how to use the product in your post.
ChatGPT can create one for you.
13) Ask ChatGPT To Generate a Good CTA for Your Blog Post
Once your post is nearly finished, it’s time to think about a CTA (call-to-action).
ChatGPT can help you come up with great CTAs that get readers to act.
ChatGPT Prompt for CTAs: You are an expert marketer and copywriter. Please generate three effective calls to action for my blog post.
You can then pick and choose the best one or combine elements from multiple CTAs into a single, effective one.
I like to add these CTAs at the end of my blog posts.
However, there may be times when you want to include them earlier to get readers to sign up for your email list, click a link, or check out an affiliate offer.
14) Ask ChatGPT To Rewrite Paragraphs
As a blogger, you sometimes need to rewrite your paragraphs.
Maybe the paragraph is too generic, too long, too short – or lacking by some other metric.
Whatever the case, ChatGPT can easily rewrite and rephrase your content.
ChatGPT Prompt for Rewriting Content: Please rewrite the following paragraph to make it more interesting and engaging [PASTE YOUR CONTENT].
To test the capabilities of ChatGPT, I’ve pasted whole blog sections into the prompt.
The AI rewrote all of it.
15) Ask ChatGPT To Summarize Information
Being able to summarize information quickly and accurately is an important skill for bloggers.
If you have a lot of detailed information, it’s often not practical or necessary to include every detail in your blog post.
Using ChatGPT, you can easily get help summarizing information.
ChatGPT Prompt for Summary: Please generate a one-sentence summary of the following text [PASTE YOUR TEXT].
You can summarize:
- Blog posts
- Scholarly articles
- Paragraphs
- Data sets
16) Ask ChatGPT To Write A Good Conclusion For Your Blog Post
No blog post is complete without a good conclusion.
ChatGPT can help you write a strong conclusion for your blog post in no time.
ChatGPT Prompt for Writing a Conclusion: Please generate an effective conclusion paragraph for my blog post.
You don’t have to use the exact words ChatGPT suggests, but it will definitely give you some ideas and provide a great starting point for crafting your own conclusions.
AI tools really make the work of getting a first draft down incredibly effortless.
17) Ask ChatGPT To Make a List of Sources
One basic tenet of good SEO (and blogging) is using the right sources.
It’s also important to cite your sources.
Believe it or not, ChatGPT can scour the internet for the best sources for your blog post topic. With the right prompt, it can also make a list of citations.
ChatGPT Prompt for Sources and Citations: Please generate a list of sources and citations related to the topic of my blog post.
Then you can add this list to the bottom of your blog post.
18) Ask ChatGPT To Create an Image Prompt
Every blog post needs a featured image.
I like to create custom, original images using AI text-to-image generators. This can help my blog post stand out from the scores of other articles using stock photos.
ChatGPT can help create an image prompt. This is a simple sentence or phrase that will provide the basis for text-to-image generators to work from.
ChatGPT Prompt for Image Prompt: Please generate an image prompt related to the topic of my blog post.
Like with the other example prompts, you can ask ChatGPT for 3, 5, 10, or more image prompts.
Whatever you prefer.
If you have an idea of what you want, include those details in the prompt.
For example, I like to add these kinds of details:
- Style
- Mood
- Lighting
- Angle
- Setting
- Artist
19) Ask ChatGPT To Generate a Google Featured Snippet Paragraph
I feel like I’m giving away some of my “secret sauce” here.
I always create a Google Featured Snippet – a concise summary of my blog post’s topic.
ChatGPT can help you generate a brief, SEO-friendly featured snippet in minutes.
ChatGPT Prompt for Generating a Google Snippet Paragraph: Please generate a Google Featured Snippet paragraph that concisely summarizes the topic of my blog post. Include as much data and information as possible in one short paragraph.
If I have an example, I might paste it into the instructions.
Usually, I still need to trim the paragraph down to under 300 characters so that Google might pick it up as a featured snippet in search results.
20) Ask ChatGPT To Suggest SEO Improvements for Your Blog Post
ChatGPT can also suggest ways to optimize your blog post for SEO.
ChatGPT Prompt for SEO: You are an SEO expert. Please generate a list of SEO improvements that would help make this blog post more effective and optimized to rank on Google. Use Google search data for this topic and keyword to inform your SEO suggestions. Present the information in a table.
You might be surprised at how accurate and helpful these suggestions can be for your blog post.
Often, ChatGPT will suggest something that I completely overlooked.
21) Ask ChatGPT To Provide a Good Meta Description
Last but not least, ChatGPT can help you craft a good Meta Description for your blog post.
A good meta description is vital for SEO purposes and to draw users into reading the post.
ChatGPT Prompt for Meta Descriptions: Generate a compelling Meta Description that will make readers eager to click on the blog post link in search engine results.
You might need to edit the Meta Description a bit but ChatGPT will give you a good start.
